Default ATV Sport 450 class woods shootout

I picked up ATV Sport magazine because of the 450 shootout yesterday and rather enjoyed the article. Its the first time that a magazine has done a shootout with all seven 450 class machines, and the first time where it was done all in the woods. I was not really suprised of who the winner was because all of the hipe, but was really suprised about all the other quads ratings. Its just nice to see a shootout in the woods because thats where the majority of us do most of our riding, not on the track. I'm sure the other magazines will do a more rounded test of dunes, and mx and the results will change a little. The other big suprise that I had was the weight of the machines with fluids and one gallon of gas. The LTR tipped the scales heavier than all and the KTM was the lightest followed by the Can Am. It was an overall good article and well worth reading.

Yeah, it was a good article. I wish they would have listed the specs on all the machines. The weight of the LT-R wasn't a big surprise as it comes with a wider axle, arms, and a steel swingarm. If the other quads were to have the same features they would be heavier as well. I can't even imagine what my Raptor weighs now with all the upgrades. It surprised me the KTM was the lighest with a Chromoly frame and wider axle. All the riders loved that machine, and why not with all the high end components. Way to go KTM

BTW, KTM was the fastest followed by the Suzuki and Polaris in a dead heat. They weren't too impressed with the Kawasaki powerplant

I might have to make a trip to wally-world and read the article. They use to get mailed to my house, but I would see them on the news stand before taking them out of my mail box so I didn't renew for 08.

Dirtwheels and Quad get to the house about 2 weeks earlier than the news stands get them.

The race was 660'. The KTM came in 1st with the Outlaw 2nd and LTR 3rd. The Oultaw and LTR both had 18" tires slowing down their top speed, then the DS with the YFZ .02 behind it. The 450R and Kawi were last. The Outlaw was the fastest to the 100 foot mark.

With 1 gallon of gas the KTM weighed in at 367 lbs, DS at 370, and the YFZ at 377 lbs. The LTR came in the heaviest at 413 lbs.

Overall ranking was
1. KTM 450 XC
2. CanAm DS 450
3. Polaris Outlaw 450
4/5 Tie between Honda TRX 450R and Yamaha YFZ 450
6. Kawasaki KFX 450
7. Suzuki LT-R 450

to add to this as a good faith disclosure for the kfx it came in near the end but it was only half a second behind the ktm so with that being said all of these 450's are pretty much in a small diagonal comparison. But all the riders said the kfx has a hard seat and the power falls off once you start climbing the RPMS up
