A light gray to tan is what you should be shooting for...

A little grey is too lean my boys, you want it very light brown to white, grey is leaner yet and then if you are leaner then that the plug turns black again.

a shop rap7 talked to said telling by the plug is about outdated with newer motors... it can help telling in extremes... extreme rich/lean.. but to be completely accurate you need to monitor the air/fuel ratio. think that was the gist of what he told nick... maybe he'll chime in if i missed more

Maybe it is but it sure beats guessing, I also look at the electrode and watch the colours there.

A sparkplug rep from NGK imformed me last year in a seminar that reading plugs was the only way to tell how an engine was doing internally, and also how well each cylinder was performing, the only other way would be to hook up and oxygen sensor to each cylinder, in multiple cylinder arrangements and diagnose each cylinder individually, he worked with Formula 1 and Nascar setting up there race cars by tuning with sparkplugs.

Now lets say you have a multiple cylinder arrangement and you hook up your air fuel moniter, it will give the results of all cylinders combined, and lets say that a couple cylinders are running rich and a couple are lean, how would the sensor know which ones are lean and which ones are rich?

well on a vehicle you mount two air fuel gauges. With two gauges you can view four parameters at a time, but you can set it to cycle through your list of paramaeters and their their cycle time each. helps monitor everything once you start doing heavy modding so you know what's going on http://www.xtreemkreations.com/Gauge1.jpg

Let's see if we can pull this back in a little... here's one of the better charts I found online when I was looking a few weeks ago:
