Raptor 350 dead in the water

Well, lo and behold..

Went camping this weekend with all the toys. Glad I brought my dirt bike too. Unloaded, getting set to go and the daughters 350 was a no go. From what I gather, no spark. I have not done anything to it since buying it last spring other than riding it. I have it sitting on charger now, so tomorrow I will strip it down of plastics, getting access to everything. I want to take carb off anyway to clean it, check valves, check all wiring for anything loose. It was running fine last camping trip.

Electrical issues are so much fun, anyone want to come over for beer and stare at it to see if it fixes itself ?? I hear more beers and more eyes helps, lol.

I am known to stare at my quad in hopes it'll fix it self, or at least until you all respond to my thread lol! If I wasn't all the way down here I would be over in a heart beat to "help" stare! hahaha good luck brother!!

Does it still have the OEM Cdi box, or aftermarket?

Is there a way to tell? I didn't do anything to it tonight, on tap tomorrow night though.

Not sure on the Raptor 350. Maybe look on ebay for a stock one, and compare markings, or call you're local yamaha shop. Some of them use mitsubishi electronics, and have that logo on them. The aftermarket ones usually have a sticker for dynatek, procom, or others.

The only reason I asked is that I've seen that some of the aftermarket Cdi's require more current to start correctly. If the battery is down, even the slightest, it will struggle to fire, if at all. Pull the plug, ground it, and see if it sparks, even slightly, just as you're letting OFF the start button. This is a sign that your battery is on it's way out, or maybe a cdi issue. Also, try another good battery if you have one.

This may not be you're problem at all, there are plenty of other things it could be. just thought I'd share some BS electrical issues I've had in the past.

It is a 2 year old battery and I did hook it up to the truck for more oomph. It has been sitting on trickle charger since Sunday afternoon as well. I did pull the plug up camping and could not see any spark. I will try again in a closed environment where it will be a little darker to see if there is anything. There was no attempt at all of any firing to it, just cranking over. I pulled the gas line to ensure gas was getting to carb, and there was. I could smell the gas as I was cranking it over so I assumed gas was getting to spark plug. More in depth investigation to come tonight. Appreciate all the leads you have given.

No problem, I had one that wouldn't show a spark whatsoever while cranking, but as soon as I let off the starter button, I could see a slight spark. I'ts better to do it in a darker environment.............. "That's what she said."

Pulled CDI out, looks totally stock. Have a few pages pulled from service manual ready to print when I get to work. Going to follow troubleshooting section in there some night this week making sure all switches and everything are reading proper ohms prior to buying anything. CDI is around $30 but that's good beer money if I find the issue elsewhere. Have my son come over and BS while dicking around with this Gremlin. Will keep this thread updated as we troubleshoot and find the core issue.

Messed around with the son's ohmmeter this weekend and the stator seems to be at 0.04-0.05 ohms, spec was supposed to be 0.07-0.08. There was another wire we checked that was eternally open so I ordered a stator/ignition coil set for around $60. Should be here by the end of the week to where I can put it in either Friday night or Saturday to confirm that was the issue.

Well I have possibly light at the end of the tunnel. New unit at the house today so measuring resistance with everything there was nothing on the bikes pick up coil and the new one is reading 433ish. Going to tip bike on its side and replace stator/pick up coil and whatever the thing is called my spark plug boot is attached to in the morning. try to do it early just in case I need a gasket or something from the dealer I can get to them while they are open.

We all know from working on cars you always have to go get parts while the frigging thing is apart, lol
