The starting on a hill would be in reference to me on it; my nephew would have no issues at all. The lag in the transmission is the same that you find with all CVT's. This one just feels a bit different since there is no gear selector, so you get a little dead spot before it engages.
The air filter is located to the bottom right of the fuel petcock in the below picture...
Left side motor Raptor 90
It seems to be sealed well enough with the opening up top (the fan on the right side as well). We did take it through some shallow puddles at a good speed (around 8 inches deep) and noticed no water when we were cleaning it up last night. The CVT is definitely sealed up very well, so no worries about any water ever getting in there.

We just picked up a black and white Rap 90 and got the kids out last Sunday. We also have a 2007 Polaris Outlaw 90 so we have a good comparison. The Rap is smaller. Length, width and height are all 2-3" less than the Polaris. The Rap does not have reverse, lights or a safety lanyard. It appears to be made more for performance than extras. The reverse does come in handy in the dunes on the Polaris. With the rev limiter removed, the Rap hauls the mail. It is definitely quicker and faster than the Polaris. My girlfriend took each for a fun run and she came back and said pretty much "Holy S___t!!!! that think hauls A__!!!! And she wasn't talking about the Polaris. They both run well but without the reverse gears and other extras, the Rap is just better for performance. Suspension seems to be very good on the Rap. The harder it was ridden, the better it worked. My girlfriend's son fits the Polaris better, he is on the taller side so the wider stance of the Polaris is more stable. Her daughter is shorter but stockier and likes the Rap much better. Could be that it looks like our 700 SE's! I had looked into the Can-Am and found that it has the same engine as the Polaris but does not have as much output due to a more restricted exhaust. The 90X is also $3200 plus tax unless you can get a good deal, we couldn't. The Rap was much less. If you wanted a more race oriented stock 90, the Polaris MXT would be the one to look at. It has a double a-arm front and Fox shocks all around. Has traditional nerfs and nice aluminum wheels. Also has a $3200 price tag. Couldn't get a deal on that one either, that's why we ended up with the standard Outlaw 90, and saved about $1500. We didn't even look at Honda because of the cost. We have a new 07 TRX250EX and paid the same for what another dealer wanted for their 90! Still no deal on a Honda 90. Good luck with your choice. If you have any questions, just drop me a PM.

I purchased a BLK & WHT Raptor 90 about a month ago for my 11yr old. As far as a first hand look at the machine, i am unable to comment being deployed at the moment. But his Mom takes him to the track almost every weekend and has riden it herself. From what ive been told that thing is awesome. Apparently it moves and both her and my son have had a blast on it. She has posted a video of it in action at the local track here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21l3ts-tWQI . Being that my son is a first time rider, I chose this quad over the others mainly because of name reputation, price, and styling. Honestly it seems to have paid off for me. I could have possibly gone for another model but i was always drawn back to this machine throughout my research and have no regrets. It seems to be holding up well.

To finailly answer my own question
With the help of your input and information here I broke down and bought a Raptor 90 for my boys for Christmas. It is great. We are still in the break in period, but from what I can tell so far it is great. I am in Wisconsin, and it is cold and so it needs a while to warm up, but once that is done, it really goes. My friends kid has a Honda TRX 90, and the Raptor 90 with its CVT transmission is much faster. Haven’t been able to drag race them yet, or do a top speed run, that will have to wait until after the break-in is done, but for now it is everything i hoped it would be. More details to follow as we get more seat time in.

I am pretty sure you can get weld on nerfs from hetrics and others,no bolt on nerfs available yet i think, but still there should be a few interchangable parts out there, the clutch kits for other 4strokes like the Polaris may also fit the Raptor.

I don't know about the Raptor 90 but we bought a 2007 Raptor 50 brand new and that thing is absolutely gutless. We have a Polaris Predator 50 that is 4 times faster than the Raptor 50. My nephew 5 and niece 3 ride them. She has the faster polaris as the Raptor is so much larger in size. He's not real thrilled with his slow Raptor 50 while sister gets the Predator 50 that will run circles around him. Those kids ride them for all the got. I don't think the Raptor 90 will be the next purchase when it's time to upgrade again. We might stick with Polaris or check out a different brand other than Yamaha.
