1986 TT225 help needed

Throwing this out there.

Sons friend picked up an 86 TT225 for $50. I know PO did a crap job of maintenance. We added 1/2 qt to the crank side bringing oil up to correct level. It has been sitting a few years, next thread will have pics. Gas tank issue... it was filthy, smelled like turpentine and VERY piss yellow came out. It is cracked, no idea what they used to try to patch it. These bikes were made 86 & 87, not sure what other parts will work. Going to clean carb next then use one of my tanks to see if it even runs. Air filter was blech...this is a revive from the dead unit.

Anybody repaired a cracked tank before?

Google is great.

Found a few ways to heat weld some hdpe plastic onto the damaged area. Will post progress as that moves along.

This will be a miracle if we get this sucker patched lol. Going to melt a detergent bottle on here to blend the plastic as one.

Drill a hole at each end of the crack to prevent spreading. Also, to keep the crack narrow, and supported, cut the slotted ends off hose clamps, heat with a torch cherry red, and quickly imbed the slots across the crack in a few spots. Then cover with your melted bottle.

I have never fixed a tank. But i have sealed watertight cannisters with an 2 part epoxy called "plastic weld" its so hard its even sandable.

Not sure if that epoxy is compatible with gas though.

I've used pour in fuel tank sealer on metal tanks but I don't know if it's compatible with plastic. You need it to flex, especially if the bike is laid down.

Idk, but id be surprised if it didnt work. Maybe contact the folks at jb weld about it. Here are their plastic epoxy products. I used the "plastic weld syringe"

I was very impressed with it. Hard as hell and has lasted for years
