Helmet to helmet communication

I am teaching my son to ride and want to be able to talk to him during a ride. I am looking for a cheap alternative to helmet to helmet communication without spending a couple hundred per setup per helmet. He doesnt have a phone, so that option isnt available.
Anyone have an economical solution or product to help me achieve this?

Thanks

Good topic. I would be inclined to get something as well but man, those set ups seem pricey..

In the old days, you could purchase kits from Radio Shack to do what you wanted. Now, you might source such kits online.

Garmin Rino - its a handheld with bar mount so you would need to run an earbud to hear.
Still not cheap, but they run on several bands, include GPS, and best of all - and why I love it for riding with kids.
It tracks the other radios in your groups and gives you direction and distance between each other.
One time, I lost my neighbors son in the desert for a few hours... Wish I had it then.

for in-helmet these new systems are amazing, HUD displays and such... but the money..
