2001 Raptor new to me with problems

I just bought this pile of crap compulsively. I rode one years ago as a kid and decided I wanted one. So I bought one that I couldn't test ride. It sucks.

I ordered carbs because the fella said the others had been messed with and weren't working. Battery.

Oil was basically all fuel so I'm guessing it had been flooding in there for a bit.

I got it to start and it'll run, but it isn't idling well. So may have to tweak the carbs. Then tweak em again when I actually ride it and see how it responds.

Reverse is my issue I can't figure out now. It works, but you don't have to twist the knob. Shift all the way down and it is going into reverse. Shifts up and into 1st and 2nd. Haven't ridden it so can't say what it is doing past there.

I'm a glutton for punishment. I'm also working on two piece of crap banshees that I bought and I have a yfz 450 but that one just works. Couple dirt bikes that aren't currently giving me trouble, but give it a couple days.

Talking to myself here. Oh well. After oil change and some time running, the carbs ironed themselves out. Cheapo $70 amazon carbs working good.

Still can't figure out the transmission and reverse thing.

Watch the cable where it hooks to arm on engine and turn knob, does arm and cable move when turning knob? cable may be out of adjustment or mechanism is stuck for some reason. is knob sloppy and loose when turning it for reverse or does it feel like there is resistance?

Cables is moving fine. The lever it attaches to on the trans has no movement in it. Like something is stuck inside the case.

if cable is adjusted to tight, it will still move properly but lever may be maxed out due to cable adjustment. unhook cable from lever on engine and see if it moves back to resting position and with it unhooked, ride it and see if you can still shift into reverse. if you can then its internal, if you cant its cable adjustment

The cable wasn't even hooked when I got it. It's definitely internal

The lever is supposed to have a spring to return it to the non-engaged position... does your's have one?

RE the "Talking to myself here", I for one am reticent to assist nubies with a sour attitude - historically they don't listen well and I end up wasting my time trying to help. If you want more responses I'd suggest approaching us with a positive attitude.

The spring is present, but not loaded. I haven't tried to get it to the proper position because I wasn't able to get the lever to move manually with my hand while attempting to shift through the gears with the bike off. I guess I could try setting it proper and seeing if I get any change.

I fancy myself a realist. Optimists often see that as negative mindset. Not much we can do about that I'd say. If you've got info you'd like to contribute, cool, I'd appreciate it. If not, no harm, it is a big internet. Someone is bound to come along. Or I'll figure it out myself and report back, whether talking to myself or not, and try to give back what I can.

On a more positive note, got my banshee running today. And it makes me really appreciate the raptor, no matter the issues.

Be forewarned that the eBay Chinese replacement carbs Iif that's what you got) seem to be way out of spec and so are hard to tune based upon the methods we're used to using for the OEM carbs... jet and passage sizes appear to be different, etc., etc.

If you still have the originals and they can be cleaned up I'd suggest using them if possible.

RE the gear shifiting and reverse lever, try turning the output sprocket while attempting (or the crankshaft - CCW -through the inspection port).
