I had the same problem and thats how i fixed mine.

That sounds like that might help. It sounded like a gear was sticking.
Not the noisy hell the one way makes when it goes bad.

Re: Starter does not engage

I'll pull the starter off this weekend if I can. (I have someone coming over Sat/Sun to do some work on my house, and my quad is in my dad's garage)

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Re: Starter does not engage

It sounds like th one-way I had the same issue on my 03 I replaced it with a L&A (make sure to buy the whole kit and not just the one way bearing as the smooth part on the gear will be toasted from the one way slipping on it) very easy install and great product I will be installing the same L&A on my wifes when it goes (they all go eventually) I recommend installing a magnetic drain plug too.

The one way and the 52t gear was already replaced at ripper racing not too long ago.

Check it anyway, and make sure, it is quite common for these parts to go defective, and I know I got 3 of them.

And honestly, Willy, you're one of no more than 2 or 3 ppl i've heard of who have ever had to replace an L&A.

Yeah, and I really don't like to brag about it, but the L&A only lasted about twice as long as the stock one way, in approximate number of starts.

Re: Starter does not engage

WOW! those L&A's have failed?!? they look bullet proof compared to stock. The ones these failed on must have a starting issue being cranked repeatedly. I start mine everyday at least once. stock = 1 year L&A = 3-4 years with no slip in sight. L&A has my vote and will receive another purchase when my wifes stock starts to slip.
