Hey I have a 2001 660 raptor and it won't start unless I take the air filter off and spray starter fluid in the back of the card and it only fires up for about 2 or 3 seconds does anyone know what this means do I just need to clean my carb or do I need to get a new carb ? Any info would help thanks so much
Typically, your symptoms suggest that you need to thoroughly clean the carbs - all fuel wetted areas - jets, inside passages, choke plunger, etc., etc. In your case, especially, rod out the pilot jets with strands of copper wire and make sure the pilot screw tips are not broken off in the throat holes.
FYI, people may wonder why you use a copper wire to clean jets? Copper is soft and won't damage or change the calibration or flow thru jets. Steel wire is harder and microscopely jagged along it's length, not to mention the sharp edges when cut. This can damage the softer copper, brass or aluminum.
So I cleaned the carb out very well and I put it back on my bike started up but I had to put a little starter fluid in the back on the carbs and it ran for about a minute very poorly and when ever I gave it gas it would sound like it was about to shut off any info would help thanks !
still sounds like clogged carbs but at the end of the day you need fuel, compression, and spark to run. May check spark and replace with a good plug check valve clearance and timing then check for good compression. Double check carbs are clean, gas is new, float set properly, and mixture screws and needles set properly.
So now it starts and runs... a big step forward. What, if any, mods to exhaust and air box does your quad have, what jets are in it, what did you set the fuel screws to and is the choke plunger working?
Are you testing with the air filter installed and air box fully assembled?
Are you aware of the common reverse and parking brake RPM limiter problems?
