Piece of steel laying underneath flywheel

2008 Raptor 700 has been a little hard to start lately according to my buddy. Dropped it off and just assumed decompressor assembly was to blame. Pulled the stator cover and found a chunk of steel was laying underneath the flywheel. Apparently a few months back he had a Yamaha shop out here put a high compression piston and stage 2 hot cam in it and started having issues about a month ago with it. Any thoughts on where the piece came from. And he dropped it off to me running and it ran good.

Yeah I pulled all that apart to make sure the decompressor assembly was intact. Found no signs of damage with any of that stuff. Cam chain is not damaged, vam chain guides aren't damaged and the cam chain tensioner is good. Used my snap on borescope to look through the case to the crankshaft and found no obvious damage there either. I don't think there is any way it came underneath the crank and ended up on the stator side. I don't think it came from the transmission either because he had no complaints about shifting problems. I'm almost wondering if when he had the motor built they dropped something down in the motor

That is a weird piece to be found on that side of things for sure. Can't trust the dealership..

Back to the hard to start issue, has he adjusted the valves on it at all?

I believe that was the hard start issue. Battery is good but he said sometimes it would try and turn over then just stop and if he out it in gear and rocked it back an forth it would start. When I pulled the stator cover off that chunk of metal was stuck underneath the flywheel and I'm assuming that was the occasional hard start issue was that being stuck underneath the flywheel. And I checked valve adjustment and it was all good. In one of the picture you can see where that metal hit the outside edge of the flywheel and left a high spot in it.

Could it be one of the clips that holds the stator to the stator cover?

As far as I can tell nothing is missing. I dont see and spots where that may have broke off from. Do you happen to have a picture of what clip your referring to
