Raptor 350 running hot?

I bought my 08 raptor 350 from a buddy and took it to the black hills for some riding and noticed it was running a little hot. I decided to reconnect the speedometer/other gauges and it was running at 290 degrees.

Is that even possible?
How accurate is that gauge?

I come from a lower altitude so I believe it is running little bit rich since the air is thinner in the hills which is why I am getting confused.

What is a good running temp for these machines?

Welcome to the forum, that sounds super hot. Those have temp gauges? Where is it located?

It is apart of the speedometer. It has multiple setting one of which includes temp. It is all electronic.

Is that an aftermarket speedometer setting? It can't be OEM. Are you in a country outside of the U.S.? That would be the only thing that might change things.

Sorry, I’ve had really patchy cell service and was away from the four wheeler. I looked and it appears to be a Vapor speedometer. Im assuming that’s aftermarket. I just took it out and rode it and it didn’t seem to be running hot. Do you think the altitude or maybe the 80 degree weather would have made it run hot?

My understanding of engines and carburetors is that the colder the air the “more air” there is so less fuel to air ratio and then running hotter. This appears to be doing the opposite. It got hotter when the temp went up meaning more fuel.

The only other thing I can think of is if the gauge is totally messed up and it was only running a little bit hot. I could feel it was a bit hot. Nearly burned my leg hair off. 😂
