So I had to go verify to make sure I wasn’t crazy. I just installed this filter in a cover I had on the bench. It is very clearly less “squish” than the factory oil filter, but it definitely does squish. Setting the cover on the filter and pressing down, there is daylight between the covers.

Today was oil/filter change day for the Raptor.

Check this filter length thing thoroughly. I just checked again and same thing as before no spacer and filter is way loose.

I can tell you with all certainty that the K & N KN-145 filter is floating with gaps on the ends if you don't shim it with a spacer at the cover end.

It literally takes a .080" spacer to get .005" of crush. Without the spacer there is .075" of gap where oil will bypass these cartridges completely.

The old K & N I took out that was shimmed .080" was not crushed and the rubber doughnuts at ends of filter don't compress very much so it must need it.

With the .080" spacer on the cover and no oring around the cover you can place the cover flat to the case by hand so that right there assures that the spacer is absolutely needed.

Don't see how others would be different.

In any case a replacement KN-145 filter that is specified to fit should be the EXACT same length as the original.

You must have a different filter cover or clutch cover than all mine. I checked this several times, none of my covers go down flat with the k&n filters. Yes they are shorter. Yes, they work.

A filter specified to fit SHOULD be exact, but they almost never are. Napa and wix for example in one of my vehicles were far enough off that they didn’t close the valve in filter housing causing loss of flow to high pressure oil system.
