I put a JT 12 tooth sprocket on the front, new JT 40 tooth on the rear and a JT X-ring chain cut to stock length, obvious the chain is loose now! Can I adjust it out or should I shorten the chain 1 link?

13/40 is stock
12/40 works with the stock length chain, adjust it.

You'll have to adjust it near the next to last notch, or at least I did with the same setup.
