Me and my friends found an abandoned motocross track, so we had to try it out...
My friend in front of me aprroached a very small jump very slowly, and I didn't understand why until it was too late... Only when I was on top I realised that there was a 6 foot drop on the other side...! I was too fast to stop, but too slow to clear it safely. The Raptor went down nose first and hit the ground, I went flying thought the air and fell face first on the hard dirt, and then 400 lbs of Raptor fell on my back, upside down!

I fell on my wrist, and the aluminum cooler rack broke when it fell on my back (I think)! I tried to push the Raptor away, then all its weight was on my left foot! I yanked my foot out, then I realised I hurt like hell all over! I had difficulty breathing as my right chest was hurting (no ribs broken, though), my right wrist was swelling more and more, and I couldn't move my hand (then I realised the wrist was broken). I also had too many bruises to mention... :eek:wned: :eek:wned: :eek:wned:
Then I was rushed to the ER.

Result (Raptor): broken cooler rack, bent handlebr, bent steering stem, broken thumb throtle assembly, bent pipe, bent engine skid plate (don't know how). :rocket: :rocket: :rocket:

Result (me; bear in mind, I am a very well built dude):
Broken wrist with a titanium plate to fix it (for the learned: Barton's radius fracture treated by internal fixation with an Ellis titanium plate and screws), several assorted bumps and bruises, a numb hand, and several months of no gym and no riding! :fruity: (my broken wrist...)

I am scared to think what would happen if I weren't in full gear (helmet, full boots, chest, back and arms protector)!

Did anyone have a similar experience? How long after a wrist fracture did you guys resume riding, going to the gym or doing sports again?

I am writing with just one hand, and a bag of ice on the other wrist... Surgery was Thursday!

Last night at a friends one guy wanted to do this sort of arm wresting with me where you grab hands, put your right feet together and try to throw each other off balance. Can't remember what it's called. This guy was an animal.

On about the 4th attempt he got a good jump (I was drunk, probably not waiting for "GO") and he pulled my arm hard and I heard a "snap". Everyone else did too... didn't hurt that much, and I still played a game of "mercy" after that, so I doubt it's broken.

But it's still pretty tender today right on the bottom edge (pinky edge) of my hand up to my wrist. Hope it's gets better.. :)

Sorry to hear about that, broken bones will repair much faster than a tendon, I tore my distal bicep tendon and it was 3 months before I could lift a pop can but after 6 months I was 80% and 1 year I am at 110%. With a broken wrist very light lifting after 4 weeks and go from there but I would check with the MD first. If you tare a tendon it will turn black and blue in the location it tares and if that happens you want to get it repaired soon because the longer you wait the harder it is to repair. Any ways hope all is well.

I broke my wrist 4 years ago on a motocross track. Hit a haybail at high speed with the front left tire the handlebars snaped back and bent my wrist back so my fingers touched my arm. It took 4 months in a cast and alot of PT to get full movement back in it. It still has a dull pain every now and again especially if its cold out. After that I found out that there is such a thing as wrist protectors ordered two up and wear them everytime I race motorcross. They are very comfortable to wear and pretty cheap they were in the RMATV catalog and they prevent hyperextenstion. Sorry about the wrist and I wish you fast healing. Like I always say if you havent broke any thing yet then you are not pushing yourself or your bike hard enough to be competitive :grin_nod:

yeah id have some fukkin huuuuuugge legs(wheels) if i were you just train legs, and u can actully train the healthy side of your body w/ dumbells if u want , u will be able to recover your injured side strenght wise much faster if u train the healthy side, i know it sounds fukkin weird but it has to do with neuromuscular efficiency, ive seen it happen !!

i broke mine on my old 660 jumping a double on a track, got sideways in the air and came down and the bars twisted right outta my hands when i landed and sure enough my wrist was killing me.. it was swollen like a boxing glove from my knuckles back to my wrist.. i really though it was sprained bad since it wasnt excrusiating pain.. 3 days at work and the swelling still as bad as day 1 i had it checked out.. x-rays showed 3 fractures.. i had to have a pin with and external head put in and removed after a couple months.. i was back to normal in about 3 months and thankfully it doesnt bother me at all after everything.. good luck and i hope all goes well

My buddy had a similar accident in November... he went on his first ride since 3 weeks ago. He broke both wrists though. He also frequented the weight room. Good luck man. God-speed.

Re: Broke my wrist... It'll be quite some time until I ride again! :-( OOOOOOOOU

I didn't break my wrist, but I was told what happened to me was much worse.

I had a para lunar dislocation of my wrist (also via a quad accident). Basically the wrist is actually a whole bunch of bones that form a cup around the bone in your fore-arm. I dislocated the little bones and the end result was my hand sitting on top of the arm instead of on the end like it's supposed to be.

It took a few weeks to get to the right hand/wrist specialist to do the work and in the mean time an intermediate Ortho doctor set the wrist back in position (at least my hand was then in the right place), but told me to see the surgeon to make ti right.

Post surgery I had three pins in my wrist and couldn't move the wrist or any of my fingers. Not long after PT started working on my motor and sensation skills as I was all out of whack. I was in PT about 4 months and stopped progressing and upon further review the doctors and the PT folk agreed that I was 'as good as it's gonna get' and later in life I'll need to have my wrist fused.

At that point I had the same range of motion I have now but everything hurt. I got back on the quad and running down to the mailbox hurt. I ended up selling it.

Fast forward 3 years - my good friends who were with me when I wrecked my Tecate invited the family out for trail riding with the kids. They both got brand new Raptor 700s and I jumped at the chance to try 'em out. I was hooked that weekend.

No wrist pain riding.
Electric start
no pre-mix fuel
Reverse

I'm stoked.

Back on topic... I think someone in better physical condition than I'm in may have bounced back faster. I had atrophied on my right side and my left side had become noticably more defined and stronger than my right side. I eventually re-gained my strength through PT and DIY activities to re-gain grip strength etc.

Stay up on the PT, as annoying and painful as it is - it works.

With any luck you won't lose range of motion. The biggie I lost was bending my wrist up. I can only go back about 30 degrees. Forward is normal.

I just did a three day weekend at Glammis and had a blast. The wrist didn't squawk a bit. :wootwoot:

I've done a face plant on the road w/ no gear on when doin a endo stoppie, just minor stratches on forearm and hand. Another time was standin on seat doin a 5th gear wheelie and hit the crown of the road, stood the bike up straight, i tried to hang on, too late to reach for rear brake, i went rolling w/ it for 30 yards......i had severe road rash scrapes on my arms, hands, knees, face, forearms, and thighs.......this was in shorts w/ no gear......i immidiately got gear afterwards but I was fine, just sore and it took months for the scrapes to fill in, i'm scared for life on arms and legs.

When I ride I feel more strain and impact on my wrists than anywhere else... definitely makes me a little nervous... especially when you catch the side of a rut or rock through a turn and the handlebar jerks hard... Also I am learning why some guys hate the yamaha thumb throttle... it definitely fatigues your hand.
