With the lid on probably not but if the lid comes off and it doesnt want to idle good when cold then its in need of a controller.

I run a Phoenix with a ProDesign intake and a PCIII. The custom map FuelMoto loaded for me has as much as a 32% increase in fuel, including certain rpms at full throttle, and 19% at 6250 rpms (full throttle) which is approximately where it makes peak power, so I'd say yes. It'll run cooler and make more power everywhere. The only parameters the stock computer uses for air/fuel ratios (at any given rpm/throttle opening) are intake air pressure (MAP) and intake air temperature, so the stock ECU really only compensates for air temp, barometric pressure and altitude. If you haven't aleady bought your intake, get a GYTR or ProDesign, better than the K&N.
