2005 660. Stock carb. I`ve had the quad a year. It runs great.

Completely stock besides pro form air filter, air box lid on.

Both carb drain lines started leaking . Not dripping ,flowing.

It was still running great even with the leaking .

I figured float must be stuck. Removed carb.

Previous owner stripped most of the float bowl screws real bad.

I completely disassembled the carb and cleaned everything.

All stock oem brass parts were reused . Only new o rings.

I also replaced both floats. Set them to 13mm height.

Reinstall carb. Starts great. Smooth idle. Sounds good! I let it get up to 185. Turn the choke off and it dies .Restart it and when i rev it sputters and back fires. I rode it and losing power and sputtering. It won`t run with the choke off. Is my choke not adjusted ? Floats? Feels like secondary carb is not getting fuel? Suggestions? Thank you.

Sorry but the answer is obvious - you messed up at least one of the carbs while repairing the float valve leaks. It ran great before, it doesn't now...

1) From where did you get the replacement rubber components?
2) did you remove the emusion tubes during cleaning (often they get reinstalled backwards)?
3) make sure that you got all the orings washers and springs reassembled in the correct order in the fuel screws and choke plunger.
4) there is no 'secondary' carb - both carbs are in full use all the time. THe left carb feeds a slightly smaller intake port so its jet is one size smaller, that is all.

Quadmaniac. O rings were from a rebuild kit .Not sure what emusion tubes are? Emission? I took it apart one carb at a time . Put it back together cleaned with new o rings. New floats were installed because the old ones got dammaged.
Is there adjustment in the choke? When I take it apart what should I be looking for? Float adjustment? Thanks for the replies.

Well took it off and put it on twice today. Measured 5x both floats set at 13mm. Jets 140 /145. Pilot screws out 3 turns . Only new things in the carbs are the o -rings from a rebuild kit. Floats and needle valves.

It would only start with staring fluid. If I rev it ,it dies. Feels like its starving for gas. Is it possible the new floats need and different height? I didn't have and tube handy to check fluid level. 3mm .

Should I try a lower setting on both floats ? Maybe 7mm. That would increase gas in the bowl? Thanks for any help. VP

I’d try it with the clear tube so you know where the fuel level really is instead of guessing if it’s too high or too low. Taking the carbs on and off (to check the float level) is a PIA so I cheated and just held them level then attached the fuel hose to them.

The float height range as said is 13mm-15mm, but you will need to check with a clear tube.
Setting the floats at 7mm will accomplish nothing.

Update. It’s running great! I was setting the floats at 13mm with the carb upside down. I didn’t know to adjust it with the needle just touching the valve seat . Basically holding carb at a 45 . Started right up . Idling smooth . Acceleration is great no back fires or sputtering. Thanks for all the replies . Love this forum .
