What are some signs of a bad intake boot? I am stumped. My sons 350 is backfiring through the carb still. Did a carb rebuild, changed the o-ring on the intake boot and changed the timing chain. Absolutely no difference. So I am assuming it's sucking air in from somewhere. That leads me to this question. If the boot has a hole or crack and it makes if backfire then what is the difference between getting extra air there and taking the airbox lid off or switching to a high performance air filter?
Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

The way I always checked the boots and Crank seas on snowmobiles was spray some carb cleaner or starting fluid on them when it is idling and see if it revs up at all. I'm sure thats not the correct way but it works for me.

I tried the carb spray on the boot and no change in idle. I checked the vavles and they were in tolerance. What do I have left to check? Head gasket?? I am at a total loss and my son is about ready to kick my butt.
