Here's the scoop:

It ran fine the other weekend

This weekend it started, idled, then died
- then it would not kickstart again

I replaced the plug
I Ohms checked the coil
The air filter is clean
Fuel is getting to the carb

It will pull start
- again, it dies when you let off the throttle
- still won't kickstart
- pull started it again, kept the RPMs up and drove it
- once again it died when I let off the throttle

Does this mean my piston/rings are bad, not enough compression to kickstart it or keep it running at low RPM?

Is it time for a top-end job or could it be something else causing this?

Yep, looks like it's time for a top-end. Gonna tear it apart, hone the cylinder, chamfer the ports. A new piston, rings, pin, clips, bearing and gaskets should fix'er.

Check the compression, anything under 93 pounds can cause a hard start............

Yeah, I did the compression test today
150 PSI after 8 kicks, pressure would not increase if I kicked it more
The coil/plug wire are good, spark plug is good
Ignition and kill switch are good
air filter is clean, reeds are good, exhaust is not clogged
carb passages and jets are good and clean

I am going to test the pick-up, then test the CDI
If they are good I am going to try tuning the carb setting

this is where it sits now:
air screw 2.25 turns out
pilot #30
needle 2nd clip
main jet #220

this is what I will try:
air screw 1.75 turns out
pilot #30
needle 3rd clip
main jet #230

It may be the carb, I was running 50:1 gas/oil mix, I recently changed to 35:1 mix. More fuel and less oil will make it run rich, which would need leaner conditions for more air. Since I am using more oil and less fuel I may need to richen it back up and add more fuel so it will start. If I pull start it, it will run, but it dies if you let off the throttle, it will not idle.

If it runs great but just doesnt idle or start properly, only play with the pilot and air screw, fooling with the needle and mains would be fruitless.............

Only reason I say that is because if it's running so lean down low it won't start or idle, it has to be running lean in the middle and up top.

Okay, changed the air screw from 2.5 turns out to 1.75 turns out and it still won't start

It will pull start, and runs good if you stay on the gas, but dies if you let off the throttle, don't knwo if that helps

Have you ever tried squirting some gas into the carb to see if it will start any better.................

when i pull the plug it is wet and smells like fuel, so it has to be getting fuel from the carb

You've lost me now, tell me a complete story..............:)
1988 Suzuki LT250R QuadRacer

When the problem initialy surfaced I kick started it, it was idling fine, then just died. So, I started it again and then it just died immediately
Now it will not kick start, but it will pull start and runs if you are on the gas, but dies if you let off the throttle

It has a clean air filter
It has a new spark plug
It has spark
compression is 150 PSI
reeds are good

I have been told I am wasting my time with the CDI because it pull starts
I have been told to check the pilot, makes sense, but looks good
I have been told to check the stator, again, it runs if pull started
