Hi,
I purchased a 2001 yamaha warrior last week, and was going over basic maintenance to be sure that I was ready for my first trip with it. I checked the air filter and did an oil change. However, when I took out the air filter, it was a loose fit and didn't fit snuggly anywhere. Is this normal?
Also, I removed the oil filter, and it was fairly snug. I pulled it out and checked it, but it had no debri on it what so ever. I went to go put it back in, but couldn't get it to fit snuggly like it was when I pulled it out. I feel so stupid that I couldn't get it back in, as I have done plenty of oil changes on a regular car. Is the oil filter supposed to fit loose, and then I put the cover back on? Or am i supposed to get it fitted snuggly somehow?
Lastly, I read the manual and it said to use 10w-30 oil or yamalube 10w-30. I put Castrol GTX in it, 10W-30. Should I drain that out and put atv oil in it? Or will castrol just once not hurt anything just so I don't waste the oil?

Thanks!

I just did my first oil change on my 660... I got an oil filter wrench just for that and you should be able to get it snug should not be loose. It should thread in there snug don't forget to put a bit of oil on the gasket....as for the oil as long as you have whatever is recommended for the ATV you should be fine....yamalube is always better but I use whatever is on hand that is 10W40 ATV oil...

Any oil with wet clutch compatibility. Valvoline is cheaper than yamalube, so that's what I use on my dirt bikes since they get their oil changed every 6 hours.

Drain that Castrol oil, it is not wet clutch compatible.

I appreciate the help. With the oil filter, there is no way to screw it on. It came out snug but went in loose. Is this right? Anyone with a 2001 Warrior know how the oil filter should fit? Thanks

Are they the same part numbers? Did the one you remove have threads? I don't have a warrior of that year, just trying to help.

no, there were no threads on the filter or on the case. There is a hole in the filter that seems that it might go into a metal flap in the oil filter casing, but im not getting it snug.

After you put it on loose, then bolt the cover on. It should snug it up then.

ok, so i dont have to worry about it being loose with the or crooked with the cover on then. I should also mention that there is no spring like some filters have.
