radiator fan

hi i have an 02 raptor and i wondered how often the fan is sopposed to come on. i really really really have to ride it hard and for a long time for my fan to kick on. is this normal. also i was just riding it for like 4 miles in like 3rd gear not really hard at all and i got home and it seemed very hot. the cases were very hot to the touch. but the fan wasnt on. should i have anything to worry about?
