That was my impression---that these are there for the same reason that a dust cap is on a car/truck's axle/spindle. But since they seem to come off so easily during normal usage, I had to ask...Headrope said:will keep water and other crap away from the hub.

Are the front bearings sealed, or packable like a car/truck? If sealed, then these are cosmetic caps, if packable, then these are _supposed_ to offer some dirt/water protection.
