Ok guys dont rip me a new one I have seen this post on here at least a half dozen times and follow through the recommendations all to no avail.
Here is what I'm working with I have an 02 Raptor 660 I picked up cheap on facebook market place from a guy that barely spoke english. The guy told me the battery was no good so I took it home and put it on a charger and low and behold the battery is charged the next day and works just fine. It appears to be mostly stock from what I can tell other then the fact that it has no air intake, filter, or lid (I know bad with sand blah blah blah im working on getting that fixed). I took the bike out the day after I got it fired it up let it idle for a little bit and took off riding with no issues at all. I rode for about an hour and a half having a blast (first raptor I have ever owned or ridden). I got home parked the bike and then over the next week would every other day or so go out fire it up and let it idle for 3-5 minutes just to make sure the battery was holding a charge. A week after I got the bike we have a big ride with friends scheduled so I go out in the morning to fire it up and load it in the truck and when I got to start it it back fires and wont start again. I end up skipping the trip and spent 8 hours trying to figure out why it wont start and fighting with a spark plug socket (dont ask) to find out that when it backfired it blew the carb off the front boots. I put it all back together and take it out riding the next day. It runs fine for the first 20-30 mins then starts to back fire and sputter above half throttle. I'm thinking its bad gas because my wifes raptor 660 starts doing the same thing and she proceeds to tell me the lawnmower was running bad on the same gas last week. I got home drained the gas out of them put new gas in wifes runs fine mine wont start (stupid intake boots again). I finally get intake boot issue fixed with new hose clamps and now when firing up bike makes loud popping at idle and then dies. Pull spark plug and its completely black clean it off and repeat with same results. I get tired of fighting it and ordered a new carb off of amazon put and it wont fire. I do some research on here and someone mentioned adjusting valves. I get into my valves and they are tight tight like less then .008 tight so I loosen them up to .010 and fire it up and it idles and purrs like a kitten, let it warm up hop on to ride it and get about 1/4-1/3 throttle in 1st gear and it starts sputtering and back firing, put it in neutral and rev it up gets to about 1/2-3/4 throttle and same results. Think to myself maybe someone did a jet kit on old carb try taking jets out of old carb and put them in new carb with same results of backfiring 1/4-3/4 throttle. Guys I'm at a complete loss here, I have seen posts about park break limiters I disconnect that and get same results. I have not tried the reverse wire ground thing yet as I have not been able to locate the ground wire everyone talks about all my wires appear to be inside a wire loom and didnt want to cut that open till I absolutely had to. Please help before I give up and try to get rid of this stupid thing without losing a bunch of money!!

Cliff Notes:
1. Bought cheap 02 Raptor Runs fine
2. No intake, no filter, no box lid
3. Valves tighter then .008 adjusted to .010
4. New Carb
5. Bike Starts idles great
6. In neutral revs to 1/2-3/4 throttle before backfiring sometime out exhaust sometimes out intake
7. In 1st gear bogs down and back fires 1/4-1/3 throttle same exhaust and intake.
8. PLEASE HELP!!

Welcome to the forum!

Think about the order of things here - you replaced the carbs to no avail, but adjusting the valves allowed you to start. GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL CARBS. It was running fine with them and they don't suddenly croak. The valves, on the other hand do - they tighten as they wear and when they are are hot they are longer - so, if they're marginal when you start up, and then go on a long ride, they can tighten up enough to release compression when they cool down again - no start.

You blamed this on carbs - it wasn't. Go back to originals!!! Aftermarket carbs are known to suck.

i tried the old carb on it and it fires but backfires at idle. I finally figured out the issue yesterday evening I was looking at stuff that came with the aftermarket carb and noticed it came with two extra jets and one of them was substantially larger then the one in the carb i switched them out and now she goes like a raped ape. There is a tiny tiny bit of lag when first taking off but I think thats a throttle adjustment issue

So you put new carbs on but didn't MATCH the jetting in the old carbs... live and learn.

Strange, indeed... Now, have fun and ride!
