The reason I ask is I just recently got a raptor it is a 01 frame and it is supposed to have a 04 engine. Now on to my problem my one way bearing starter clutch literally flew out the block today and I need to know what model year parts to order

Don't matter 01 to 05 will work. Get the la one way.

Pretty sure that you need to use 01-03 with 01-03, and 04-05 with 04-05 unless you also replace the flywheel.

The kit listed in the ebay auction only includes the 52 tooth gear, not a flywheel.

OP if you know you need the parts then pop the side cover off and compare your part numbers to the OEM numbers and see what year they match up with. I do not know of a way to tell what year a motor without opening it up.

One way parts have to match the year of the flywheel. They have different bolt patterns so you cannot bolt a 04 one way to a 03 flywheel. 04-05 setup is heavier but it also has a larger bearing surface for the one way to grip. The weight difference was the whole reason why Trail Tech came out with there -17 oz flywheel for the 04-05. It was to get the weight back down to where the stock 01-03 setup was. It did end up being a few oz lighter than the stock setup but it wasn't worth the cost to swap everything over to use it on an 01-03.

So am I correct in assuming that yamaha changed this for the better? I ask because I have an 01' that is making some gnarly clanking noises when starting that I think is the one way. If it is a better setup, would it be worth getting the 04-05 flywheel?

It was deffinatly a change for the better with the OEM Yamaha one way. The larger diameter race on the 52t gear moves the point at which the one way and gear make contact farther out from the center. Their for requiring less effort / grip between the one way and gear. Effort on the starting motor is still the same because the 52t gear is still the same diameter 52t gear. The down side or upside to the 04-05 setup is that its heavier, almost a full pound. It will make your raptor rev slightly slower but it will not bog as easy. I tried the 04-05 -17 trail tech flywheel on my raptor in my sig. It felt about like my stock 10-03. I was in need of a new one way at the time of the swap so it only cost the extra cost of the flywheel. If I went and bought the whole setup -17 flywheel, and L&A kit I would have been greatly disappointed. I ended up removing the -17TT flywheel because it didn't have timing marks. It was a real pain trying to set the valve clearance. So I went in search for a 04-05 OEM Yamaha flywheel. It was pretty hard finding an 04-05 flywheel. Everybody assumes that all 660 raptor parts are the same. So sellers on ebay automaticly list their parts as 05 because it sounds newer, looks better, and people assume less worn out. I went through several flywheels that were listed at 2004 or 2005 that turned out to be 01-03's.

After putting on the 04-05 flywheel I like how it feels. I weigh 250 and my raptor launches a lot better with the heavier flywheel. Especailly when running a top end camshaft that costs you a little bottom end power. I didn't really learn about the difference between the two flywheels until after I went through it. I started asking around and that's when I found out that the -17TT flywheel wasn't really that light weight when compaired to the 01-03 OEM Yamaha flywheel. I probably wouldn't have never tried an 04-05 flywheel if I didn't already have the one way, and dis like for the -17TT's non timing marks.

Any way back to your question.

I am sure it made a difference when running an OEM Yamaha one way but with the L&A kit or the L&L Extream kit I doubt its that big of a difference. By the way I cant remember which kit is is but one has 8 rollers and the other has 9. I would go for the kit with 9 because that's one more roller to grab the 52t gear.

There Is a difference in the 01 to 02 cranks, but has nothing to do with the shaft portions of the crankshaft, the only thing that is different is the way the manufacturing company of the crank made the lube holes for the rod end of the connecting rod in the crankshaft webs itself..........

This is a 9 year old thread, so I don't think any of those members are around.

Visibly there won't be a difference. You need to look at the part numbers.

They don't show the entire part number on the CDI, but you will see 5LP-XX

-00 is for 01
-10 is for 01 California Edition
-20 is for 02-03
-30 is for 04-05
