Raptor 700 won't stay running

So the other weekend I was riding around the house and my raptor just cut off and wouldn't start back up (fuel pump wouldn't come on) found a blown fuse which fixed the pump but now it will not stay running and pops like crazy, it is completely stock but the idiot who had it before me was running it without an air filter and they drilled a hole in the muffler which has no packing left in it... I don't know if this has anything to do with it not running because it ran fine untill that day never had any problems, I have changed the fuel and spark plug, I also cleaned the throttle body and injector, and I am not getting any codes... any help will be highly appreciated, thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Which year is it? Does it fire right up or does it take a few seconds? Do you have air lid on or off?
If it was running with no air filter I'd say it has to do something with the dirt getting in but since you mentioned that you cleaned it .. I have no idea. I mean it should at least run. Even if poorly.

2008. Takes just a second to start but I have to give it gas, the air box lid is on, when it starts I have to pedal the gas to keep it running and it sounds like crap and as soon as I let off the clutch it cuts off

It's possible the fuel pump is going bad. There is a reason it blew the pump fuse from drawing to many amps. Also, try cleaning the injector. Use a 9volt battery to open the injector and put seafoam in it and gently blow compressed air through both ends while it's open

Try putting the air filter and lid back on.

How did you clean the TB? Pull it and re-clean. Soak the injector in Sea Foam or carb cleaner. Flush as above with carb or brake cleaner. And yes, it needs a air cleaner, not just a sock. Watch the sock, it's sucking in, so it is dirty/restricted. Clean it or toss it. Turn your idle screw in slightly. Check your battery voltage for at least 13.5 volts. Trickle/float charge for a few days.

Low voltage or a bad charging system will increase amperage. Amperage creates heat and blows fuses. Check your battery voltage and charge as necessary. Check cable connection for shiny clean and no corrosion (white powder) between the cable and connectors.

Is it blowing black smoke when you try to rev it? If its not, it seems like a mega lean condition to me just from the video. Definitely don't leave any stone unturned though. But if it was just running fine then it blows a fuse and now it don't run right all the sudden, I would for sure go over the whole fuel system, including tracing the wires to the pump, looking for any wire damage. Fuel injectors do clog and require them to be open in order to properly clean them out. Also if the pump is running with drag, because its wearing out or clogged with dirt or debris it can blow a fuse by drawing more amps. Also make sure you have enough fuel and the gas cap vent is breathing. Blow through it to check.

I don't suppose you have another tps you can try?

Yeah at that point I think you've isolated that it's the TPS.

What year is it? The 06 and 07s were notorious for going through TPSs. They changed the TPS design slightly in the 08+ which solved the problem

The TPS is sensitive to water, especially a pressure washer. The '06-'08 TPS electrical connector points up. The '09 and newer has the connector pointing down. Try drying it with a heat gun or hair dryer.

After you get the tps figured out, you need to have an air filter and lid on it. It will not run right like that without a fuel controller. Can actually cause damage. It would be black if it's dumping fuel. Just from the video, my initial impression is it's dangerously lean.

As far as I know the parameters that determine how it will run are determined before the ignition chamber. So the problem is caused between airbox and piston. The exhaust has some effect but not this much that it wouldn't run.

Put your air filter and airbox lid back on. Then continue with debugging. Friends chinese atv didn't run properly if you took the seat off. It changed the airflow a bit and it ran like crap. If you took airbox lid of it didn't even start. Makes you wonder ... Like it has been suggested I too believe it is getting to much air and since it has no fuel controller it is not compensating for that extra air its getting.

If it was me, I’d follow ALL the suggestions mentioned. The cleaning, charging of battery, installing an air filter, and I’d set the tps per the manuals instructions, I’d change the spark plug, and empty and clean out the gas tank. Get the bike as close to “right” as possible, and go from there. The 1/2 wit that owned the thing before you didn’t take care of it in anyway. The folks on this forum are damn good, but you got a lot of “could be’s” right now. Keep us posted and, Welcome to

I believe battery should be 13.5? DEZ mentions this on the first page. Not sure if it is the factor there, but it's possible. Wonder if it slipped time at all by a tooth? Meh, that's the deeper portion mentioned in post #24.

Are you close to Saint Louis Missouri by chance? I'll get it running for you free of charge

Checking timing is super easy. From the video you already have it ready.

#32 ·
Back fire is either jumped timing, leaking/bent valve(s), or lean fuel. Check your timing marks, it's not hard.

#33 ·
If those valves are gaped within spec. I"ll....well, I don't know what I'll do but it'll be drastic. Also, way to go Blakeh! For following the advice given instead of just blindly posting more possibilities. You'll get this.

Fresh plug every time. Pick up two or three. Once fouled it will never run right. Adjust your timing and valves then add a new plug. Your timing tensioner could be maxed out and chain stretched throwing your timing off. But a valve adjustment is free and easy. It you run a 3” deck screw with a #2 Robertson head into a piece of wooden broom handle it will act as a great tappit adjuster tool.
